Depay almost left Barcelona to join Juventus during the summer transfer window. But in the end, the deal fell through, and the Italians instead signed Arkadiusz Milik.
Up until the last minute of the transfer deadline day, Depay’s future was unclear. However, he has now announced that he will be remaining with Barça.
The ex-Lyon attacker has seen minimal action under Xavi, who prefers Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Dembele in the up front.
In any of Barcelona’s first four matches in the league, Depay did not take the field for the club. However, he has started both of his team’s most recent league matches, which were against Cadiz and Elche.
Last time out, Depay scored in a 3-0 triumph against Elche at the Camp Nou. However, he faces stiff competition for a starting place this season given Xavi’s abundance of offensive alternatives.
With a busy schedule set for Barcelona following the international break, Xavi is expected to change his players more often. And that might pave the way for Depay to earn more playing time before the World Cup.
