World Cup Round of 16 matches and predictions – Part 2

The final four set of round 16 matches in the 2022 World Cup are now decided, with the games taking place on December 5th and 6th.

Japan v Croatia – 5/12/2022 – 3 PM (GMT)

Japan have been one of the surprise teams in Qatar so far, having already beaten both Spain and Germany in their group, despite their opponents having vastly more possession than them in those games.

They are a counter-attacking team that are prepared to run all day, even though their team does not contain any stars.

Croatia had a hard time in their group, and their team isn’t nearly as good as the one that made it to the final in Russia four years ago. However, Luka Modric is still one of their best players, and they may be too good for Japan.

Brazil v South Korea – 5/12/2022 – 7 PM (GMT)

Despite losing to Cameroon in their final group game, Brazil’s status as World Cup favourites remains undiminished, and that defeat should be put into context – they fielded a much changed team using the opportunity to give most of their starters a rest.

Certainly, they will start as clear favourites against a South Korean team that can be considered fortunate still to be in the World Cup after a late injury time winner in their final group game against Portugal. Prior to that, they had looked destined for the exit door.

They will bring lots of energy and running to the game, but the gap in quality should be decisive.

Morocco v Spain – 6/12/2022 – 3 PM (GMT)

When Morocco beat Belgium, they really made the headlines, and it was an impressive performance for them to top a group that also contained Croatia. Defensively sound, they have also shown an ability to attack teams on the break at pace.

Spain flattered to deceive when they put seven past Costa Rica in their opening game, because they did not look so threatening in their subsequent games against Germany and Japan, and, although they will not change their principles, the lack of a main striker could yet come back to haunt them.

It would be a major mistake for the Spaniards to underestimate the North Africans, and this is likely to be a close game, Spain will start the slight favourites, though.

Portugal v Switzerland – 6/12/2022 – 7 PM (GMT)

This game could well develop into a battle and it would be no surprise were it to go to extra time and penalties. Portugal won their opening two games without being totally convincing in both, but with Cristiano Ronaldo knowing this could be his last ever World Cup game, he will be looking to go out in style.

Switzerland, though, have been quietly effective, even if they have flown under the radar somewhat. They will be organised in defence and look to hit the Portuguese on the break, with striker Breel Embolo proving that he can compete at the highest level.

With some combative players on both sides, there is also the potential for this game to become intensely physical and the referee will need to keep a firm hand.
