Who are the managerial candidates for the Wolves job?

Wolves

Wolves are still looking for the man who will replace Bruno Lage as manager.

The Portuguese was relieved of his duties after 15 months in charge at Molineux following the West Midlands club disappointing start to the season.

The club are 18th in the table, with just six points from 9 games played so far, and have won just once in the current campaign.

Their first choice to succeed him was former Spain and Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui, who led Sevilla to Europa League success two years ago, but lost his own job after they too made a poor start to the season.

The Wolves’ executive chairman, Jeff Shi, went to Spain to talk with him more, but he turned them down and said it was because of his family. His father is ill, and he does not want to leave the country at this time.

Now, they are looking at other names on their list. One of them is Rob Edwards, which may come as a surprise to some since he was also fired by Watford after just ten games in charge. He was the latest manager to be fired at the Hertfordshire club, which seems to have a policy of firing managers every few games.

Edwards has strong connections with the club. He played for the team between 2004 and 2008 and began his coaching career with the club’s academy. He also had a brief spell in charge of the first team in 2006 on an interim basis after Walter Zenga was sacked.

He had a brief spell with the England under-16 side before he was appointed head coach of League Two side Forest Green Rovers. In his first season, he led them to promotion to League One for the first time in their history and was named League Two Manager of the season.

However, he departed the club in an acrimonious fashion after Watford poached him.

Another name in contention is another Portuguese, Pedro Martins. He led Greek side Olympiacos to three successive league titles, but left the Athens side in August, and remains out of work.

Wolves have a strong Portuguese connection through super-agent Jorge Mendes, the man whose clients include Cristiano Ronaldo. He has an advisory role at the club, and he has been responsible for bringing a number of the first-team squad to England in the first place. He also acts as the link between the club’s Chinese investors and the transfer market.

So, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Martins was put in the hot seat at Molineux.

The other name also being considered is Ange Postecoglou, the Greek-Australian who is enjoying so much success with Celtic at the moment, having won the Scottish Premiership and League Cup with them last season.

Whether he wants or should leave Scotland is another question. North of the border he is sure to be in contention for all the major honours, whereas with Wolves he may find himself involved in a relegation fight. He may also want to consider the example of Steven Gerrard who enjoyed some great times with Rangers, but has found life at Aston Villa considerably more challenging.
