The most memorable moments in Serie A in 2022

2022 was the year that AC Milan won the Scudetto for the first time in a decade.

And, with the country forced to watch on while others contested the World Cup, it ended with one of their major clubs, Juventus, engulfed in crisis.

2021 – 2022 season

Inter Milan were the defending champions from the previous year, and they maintained a strong challenge throughout the season, which came down to the final round of matches. However, their city rivals AC Milan tipped them for the title, with victory against Sassuolo clinching it for them. It was their first title since 2010 – 2011, and their 19th in all.

Inter had to settle for second, ahead of Napoli, with Juventus claiming the last remaining Champions League spot.

Jose Mourinho’s Roma could only finish sixth, but they did win the inaugural Europa Conference League and celebrated it as if was the Champions League instead.

2022 – 2023 season

After a summer that saw fans protest after Napoli sold many of their best-known and highest-paid players, their supporters might have feared the worst at the start of the new season.

But having recruited exciting young talent like Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Min-Jae Kim, and Mathias Olivera, Luciano Spaletti’s team have made a storming start to the new campaign, and, when the season paused for the World Cup, they were eight points clear at the top of the table.

Napoli have only won the league twice, back in the days when Diego Maradona was with the club, but now they have hopes they can end that long trophy drought. They also made a storming start in the Champions League, thrashing Liverpool at home, and eventually qualifying at the top of their group.

Juventus

Juventus are currently third in the table, but it has been a troubled season for the Turin club, who crashed out of the Champions League without winning a game, and now will play Europa League football in the year to come.

That is a big blow to them from a revenue perspective, especially as they recently posted record losses. And the recent ruling from the European courts that FIFA and UEFA were within their rights to block the European Super League, which they still form part of, seems to have blocked another route to rescuing their finances.

However, the situation in the short term may be about to get worse, following the resignation of the entire board.

That follows news that Italian prosecutors may be about to bring charges following an investigation into false accounting at the club between 2018 and 2020, involving transfers, player contracts, and dealings with agents.

UEFA has also decided to open its inquiry into the matter, with the club facing potential charges of breaching financial Fair Play and licensing terms.

If they are found guilty, they could lose points, be sent down to Serie B (which is what happened to them after the Calciopoli scandal), or be banned from playing in European football for a few seasons.

It could become one of the major football stories of 2023.
