Pepe, who last appeared for Porto in a Sept. 13 Champions League defeat to Club Brugge, won’t participate for Portugal in the Nations League due to injury, the federation stated.
Doctors assessed Pepe at the team’s training camp this week, but no ailment wasn’t specified.
There was no word from the federation on whether or not Fernando Santos would call a replacement for Pepe.
Joo Félix and Bernardo Silva practised individually while Portugal prepared, but they’ll shortly join the group.
Portugal, the first Nations League champion, is behind Spain by one point into the last two matches in Group 2 – against the Czech Republic on Saturday and at home against Spain three days later.
The group winners will be the only ones to go on to the final four.
