Erling Haaland broke Premier League record

When Erling Haaland signed for Manchester City in the summer of 2022, there were a lot of expectations, one of the main reasons being that he could prove himself at the highest level. The Norwegian striker, at only 22 years old, had dazzled the world with Red Bull Salzburg in Austria and Borussia Dortmund in Germany, but he has reached a whole new level this season by breaking the Premier League goalscoring season record.

This record in particular was about the player who had scored the most goals in a single Premier League season, which was held by Andy Cole (34 goals with Newcastle United in the 1993/94 season) and Alan Shearer (34 goals with Blackburn Rovers in the 1994/95). It is also worth pointing out that there were 42 games at the time in the Premier League, so they had four more games over Haaland, although the Norwegian “only” needed 31 games to achieve the bar of 35 goals.

Haaland has taken the Premier League by storm, reaching the kind of productivity and performances that only some of the best players can reach in their peak years. His pace and physicality, two of his best tools as a footballer, had adapted quite well to the demands of the Premier League and has looked quite comfortable in a wide variety of situations across the season.

Another thing worth pointing out is how manager Pep Guardiola has managed to make things work with Haaland. While it seemed like a no-brainer at first, the truth is that Guardiola has rarely succeeded with a traditional number nine, and scoring goals wasn’t something that Manchester City were struggling with by the time of Haaland’s arrival, so it seemed more like a signing that was handed as an opportunity in the market rather than anything else.

However, the Spaniard has managed to adapt his playing style to suit Haaland’s strengths while still retaining the core elements that have made him such a successful coach. This in return has made Manchester City a much more complete side as they can go long or route one for Haaland, and he is going to seize these chances, adding an element of surprise and variety that wasn’t there before the arrival of the Norwegian.

It is also worth mentioning that the former Borussia Dortmund man could spearhead Man City to a treble this season as they now depend solely in themselves to win the English Premier League after trailing Arsenal for most of the campaign, they are in the FA Cup final against Manchester United, and they are poised to face Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League semifinals in a few days.

All of this adds to Haaland’s season, and his goals this year could very well represent a memorable campaign for Manchester City. The Champions League has been long coveted by the billionaires in charge of the club, and now with the Norwegian at the helm, they could finally reach that promised land, although there is still a chunk of the season to be completed.
