With the World Cup in Qatar less than two months away, Manchester City and England midfielder Kalvin Phillips is scheduled for surgery.
Kalvin Phillips, who was cut from England’s World Cup squad due to a shoulder injury, must now undergo surgery and hope for a quick recovery in order to play in World Cup.
Because of an ongoing problem, the Manchester City midfielder was left out of the team that defeated Wolves on Saturday afternoon.
Despite joining the club in the summer from Leeds United, Phillips is yet to start a game for his new team. He most recently appeared as a substitute in the 2-1 victory against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday night.
It is thought that the injury happened during training on Thursday, but Gareth Southgate still included him in the England team for the upcoming Nations League matches against Italy and Germany.
Phillips won’t be able to play in those games, but the larger worry is that he won’t be able to recover in time to play well at the World Cup since he needs surgery to fix his ailing shoulder.
If all goes according to plan, Southgate will announce his provisional team for the tournament in Qatar on October 21, and England’s opening game will be against Iran on November 21.
After becoming one of the summer of 2020’s breakthrough stars at Euro 2020 and playing the entire 120 minutes of the final at Wembley Stadium, Phillips is a shoe-in for a starting spot in the England manager’s 26-man squad and was awarded England’s player of the year that year.
