Lionel Messi won’t be able to play for Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday against Lorient because of an “inflammation” in his Achilles tendon.
The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner is expected to return to team training with the French champions next week, but Argentina fans will be nervous as the World Cup kicks off later this month.
On November 22, Argentina will play Saudi Arabia in their World Cup opener. Next up for Argentina are tough matches against Mexico and Poland.
Given that there isn’t much of a breather between the end of the club football season and the start of the World Cup in Qatar, any type of setback at this time may become more of an issue.
Messi, at 35 years old, has been in fantastic form for league-leading PSG, scoring seven goals and dishing out a league-high 10 assists.
Before Messi leaves for Qatar, PSG will play one more match, and it will be at home against Auxerre on the following Sunday.
